About Us
The Byerly Foundation is a private foundation that was established in 1995 using money from the sale of the Byerly Hospital. The Foundation is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees whose primary goal is to be a catalyst for positive change. All Foundation resources are used to benefit the people of Hartsville, SC and have a positive impact on education, economic development, and social needs in our community.
Since its inception, the Foundation has contributed more than $25 million in the Hartsville community. The Foundation adheres to IRS guidelines for private foundations and spends a minimum of 5% of its assets annually. Through constant, open discussion, the Foundation supports strategic cooperation and resource pooling among entities seeking to make a difference in Hartsville.

Executive Director
Brianna Douglas, Ph.D. is the Executive Director of The Byerly Foundation. Since starting her career, she has had the pleasure of working with residents, city officials, nonprofits and businesses to make Hartsville a better place to live, learn, work and play. Prior to leading the Byerly Foundation, Brianna had more than a decade of higher education leadership experience at Coker University. She held positions in the divisions of advancement, business/finance, athletics, and student affairs, while serving on the cabinet for 6 years. She is a perceptive leader who enjoys building strong relationships with community members, facilitating collaborations that drive positive change, and creating inclusive spaces that encourage active participation and engagement.
Brianna holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Coker University, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, an MBA from University of North Florida and a Ph.D. in Education and Human Resource Studies from Colorado State University. Brianna lives in Hartsville with her husband Bruce and two children, McKendrie and Lila.
